Forex can feel like a different language at first โ pips, lots, spreads, pairs. Once you understand these few core terms, the entire market starts to make sense. This is the vocabulary every forex trader needs before placing their first trade.
What Is a Currency Pair?
Forex trading always involves two currencies at once โ you're buying one while selling the other. For example, in EUR/USD, you're trading the Euro against the US Dollar. If you believe the Euro will strengthen against the Dollar, you buy the pair; if you expect it to weaken, you sell.
Major, Minor, and Exotic Pairs
Major pairs involve the US Dollar and another large economy's currency, like EUR/USD or GBP/USD โ these tend to have the tightest spreads and highest liquidity. Minor pairs exclude the Dollar (like EUR/GBP), and exotic pairs involve a major currency paired with a smaller economy's currency, which usually means wider spreads and more volatility.
Understanding Pips
A pip is the smallest standard price movement in a currency pair โ typically the fourth decimal place. If EUR/USD moves from 1.1050 to 1.1051, that's a one-pip move. Pips are how traders measure profit, loss, and risk in a standardized way across all currency pairs.
What Are Lots?
A lot is the size of your trade. A standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot is 10,000, and a micro lot is 1,000. Beginners should almost always start with micro lots โ they let you practice with real money while keeping potential losses small while you're learning.
Spread: The Hidden Cost of Every Trade
The spread is the difference between the buy price and the sell price of a pair โ it's effectively the broker's fee built into every trade. Tighter spreads on major pairs mean lower trading costs, which is one reason beginners are usually advised to start there.
Putting It Together
Once you understand pairs, pips, lots, and spread, you have the basic vocabulary to read any forex strategy or signal. The next step is learning how news events move these pairs โ which is exactly what we cover in the next article.
